iPad 2 Jailbreak Impossible At Least Until iPhone 5 Release Date [Cupertino Patches iOS Jailbreak Exploits (Limera1n & SHAtter); Renders iPad 2 Jailbreak Impossible For The Time Being]

Just earlier this week we were wondering whether the iPad 2 will be jailbreakable at launch or not and now that we have the device out officially we can tell you that Apple managed to score one more temporary point against the iOS hackers by patching two important exploits that made jailbreaking possible, Limera1n and SHAtter. In other words the iPad 2 jailbreak is not available right now and we might not have such a tool available in the wild for a few more months, when the iPhone 5 will be released.

Up until now we were telling you that, no matter what iOS version Apple would launch, all current iOS devices (iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and all iPod touch generations and the Apple TV) would be jailbreakable for life. And that’s still a valid statement for the future of these devices as the hacking world found not one, but two exploits that allow jailbreaking procedures. Apple can’t fix them with simple software update as a hardware refresh is required to neutralize them.

The iPad 2 is exactly that, a hardware refresh, a brand new iOS device that has been built from the ground up. Unlike the Verizon iPhone 4 (which Apple didn’t “fix” and it’s also jailbreakable) the second iPad can’t be jailbroken using current jailbreak tools that rely on the Limera1n exploit, and it looks like SHAtter, an exploit that was saved for devices like the iPad 2 and/or the iPhone 5, is also useless.

Apple patched both exploits so the iOS hackers have to find out a different way to attack the iPad 2 with and what’s interesting about the whole thing is that Apple patched these two security wholes long before they were actually used, in March 2010. The hackers will certainly find ways to jailbreak the iPad 2 in the future, most likely though these will be userland hacks, at least initially. But will they launch them as soon as they discover it or will they wait for Apple to release the iPhone 5 first? After all customers will want to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 5 too, and chances are that hackers will not want to use a jailbreak solution just for the iPad 2 when it could be employed to jailbreak both the new iPad and the new iPhone later in June/July.

Naturally we’ll be keeping our eyes wide open for the first iPad 2 jailbreak tools, not that we’d ever encourage you to go for such tools in the first place. However, since jailbreaking is legal, and you can do whatever you want with the thing after you purchased it, we invite you to share your opinions on the need of an iPad 2 jailbreak on the forums and follow us on Twitter for further iPad 2 jailbreak news!
