iPhone Dev Team releases PwnageTool 4.3.2

The iPhone Dev Team, as promised, has updated its PwnageTool app to version 4.3.2, which now includes the 4.3.2 untethered jailbreak that had been introduced to its other jailbreaking tool, redsn0w, a few days ago. The jailbreak is compatible with all iDevices that support iOS 4.3.2 except for the iPad 2, and the purpose of this PwnageTool release is mostly for unlockers who wish to update and jailbreak while preserving their baseband version in order to preserve their carrier unlock.

The iPhone Dev Team’s ultrasn0w unlocking tool has also been updated alongside PwnageTool to work with iOS 4.3.2, although no new baseband support has been added at this time. The Dev Team noted the following in.

Note that there’s a corresponding update to ultrasn0w, which has been bumped up to v1.2.2 to get along with iOS 4.3.2 (the ultrasn0w update does not include any new baseband support!). Please reboot your iPhone using the normal “slide to power off” swipe after installing ultrasn0w 1.2.2.

You can grab the official BitTorrent release of PwnageTool 4.3.2 from ThePirateBaty.org. The Dev Team has noted that it is best to ensure that the SHA1 sums always match for safety reasons, which for this release is as follows: SHA1 Sum = fdf9d7cba7872451bbca1ccae95a82cfefb352e7.

Jailbreak App Stops iPhone Track-Tracking in its Tracks

Blogs were outraged Wednesday following the rediscovery that 3G-enabled iOS devices like the iPhone store a record of users’ GPS positions in a local file. Of course every person with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch agreed to let Apple store and use this information, but it’s much more fun to get outraged than it is to read terms and conditions.

No matter — for those who don’t want their iPhones to remember that they were pillaging a Dunkin’ Donuts instead of working out at the gym, there is now a simple answer: untrackerd.

Jailbroken iDevice owners can now install a simple utility that will stop their devices from storing this information.

The app is free and is available in the BigBoss repository, but the app might just be a temporary solution — according to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, the file that stores location history is actually a cache file that should be cleared out occasionally but isn’t due to a bug or an oversight.

Gruber thinks the bug will be fixed in the next iOS update, though no timeline is available at the moment.

Tools wipe location data from (some) iPhones

Want to wipe location-tracking data that's being stored on your iPhone without your permission? There's an app for that, but you've got to jailbreak your iPhone first.

Several tools have cropped up as a fix for people riled up about the fact that iPhones (and iPads) are surreptitiously logging unencrypted location-related data on the device, including cell tower coordinates, time stamps, cell operator and Wi-Fi networks used, and longitude and latitude from GPS signals--basically a when-and-where of your phone's location going back at least a year.

Police have known about and been using this information, and cellular operators have access to it and can provide it when served with a court order. But anyone with physical access to the phone (and access to a desktop backup of the data) is now able to see an iPhone owner's whereabouts over time.

The fact that consumers don't realize that their phones are recording and storing this information in clear text has come as a big surprise to many people, including consumer advocates who say it's a big privacy violation.

You can hide the data that may be on your desktop by encrypting your iTunes backups. And you can turn off GPS to stop the logging of at least that information, but that doesn't clean up any data stored on the device, and it will severely limit use of the device for location-based services like mapping. There is no way to disable the tracking, because it's baked into the operating system.

The only option at this point is to use one of the programs written specifically to delete the data. But, as unapproved iPhone apps that reach into the iOS functions, they're not available through Apple's official App Store. They're unsanctioned apps that run only on iPhones that have been jailbroken--devices in which the operating system has been unlocked so owners can run any application they want.

Canadian programmer Ryan Petrich released a tool Wednesday called Untrackerd, which deletes the location-tracking information from the device. The app runs on iOS 4.0 and higher and installs a so-called "daemon" program that runs in the background, continuously cleaning up the data in the "consolidated.db" file where it is stored. "No new icons are added to your homescreen," according to the description on TheBigBoss.org. "There are no options to configure."

Untrackerd, which also is available from the Cydia third-party app store, deletes any data more than 30 minutes old from the consolidated.db file, checking every 5 minutes (except when the phone is in sleep mode) for changes to the file. The most recent data is left intact so the device can still pinpoint the phone's location for driving directions, for example, Petrich told CNET today.

The app does not zero out the deleted data multiple times, as is necessary to prevent bit-level analysis during forensics from unearthing data written to permanent storage. Meanwhile, whatever Untrackerd deletes on the device gets mirrored when the desktop sync is performed, he said.

"I did not make any attempt to make sure it is completely wiped from the disk or [to] wipe any other private data," said Petrich, an Edmonton-based software programmer for mobile ad company Medialets. "I try to maintain the functionality of consolidated.db...[which is used] to improve the performance of location services."

Asked why he wrote the tool, Petrich said: "I created it because I wasn't 100 percent comfortable with the entire history of my location being stored on a device that is very easy to lose."

Another tool, Location Blocker, goes further and wipes all historical data from the consolidated.db file and also blocks the device from storing any further cell and Wi-Fi location data. Step-by-step instructions for installing it are here.

Petrich said he didn't know of any other tools that would help iPhone users get rid of this data. He also said he didn't know why Apple was logging the data but said he doubts it is for malicious purposes because "it's not being transported anywhere."

New iOS 5.0 Rumors Squashed, White iPhone 4 With Jailbreak

Earlier this week we showed you some videos that apparently unveiled the White iPhone 4, which had iOS 5 running, or that’s what it seemed to be. Now it looks like bloggers and iPhone users are squashing these new iOS 5.0 rumors.

You can see the two videos in this post here, which were made in Vietnam. One of the videos seems to show a new style of multitasking that is not standard for iOS 4, although we’ve received feedback from our readers that some features shown are possible on an iPhone 4 jailbreak.

One reader said that Multifl0w is used to multi-talk, and that was used in the video on an iPhone 4 with a white faceplate. The videos do look impressive, but we can confirm some of the features are possible on a jailbroken iPhone.

Some people thought this could be a White iPhone 5, although earlier Apple rumors point to the 5th generation iPhone not having the GB capacity on the back. We’re likely to never know how official many leaked videos are, with most being made by Apple fans, but with the recent news of a white iPhone 4 getting sold early in the UK, anything is possible.

If you have not seen the videos, check out the previous article and let us know if you agree that the device is just a jailbroken iPhone 4.

Apple Patched iPad 2 Jailbreak Exploit in iOS 4.3.1

Popular iPhone developer and hacker Comex, who is known for his userland based jailbreak tools such as Spirit and JailbreakMe, today has confirmed in a series of tweets on Twitter that Apple has patched his kernel exploit starting from iOS 4.3.1. This was the same exploit which was used to jailbreak iPad 2 on iOS 4.3, right after its launch in United States.

The good news is that the ‘untether’ exploit found in iOS 4.3 by iPhone security expert and hacker Stefan Esser is still present in iOS 4.3.1, and at this point seems to be the only hope for the jailbreak community to look for forward to.
Also in case you don’t already know, tethered jailbreak solution for iOS 4.3.1 on a variety of iOS devices is available already for both Windows and Mac users. You can follow our step by step tutorials to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch:
We will keep you updated as always.

iOS 4.3.2 Gets An Untethered Jailbreak; iPhone 4 Users Beware Though

It took the Dev-Team just a couple of hours to bring a Tethered Jailbreak to iOS 4.3.2 after its release, and just four days to make all the magic become Untethered. Redsn0w has just been updated to include the untethered feature, which was made possible since Apple somehow forgot to patch the same vulnerability discovered by Stefan Esser (aka @i0n1c) which made the Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 possible just recently.

Sadly it seems some iPhone 4 users experienced problems with the Jailbreak so Redsn0w version 0.9.6RC13 is limited to only offer tethered Jailbreaks while the exploit is fixed. Stay tuned as that will most likely be fixed in just a matter of time.

View iPad 2 show 3D effects without glasses

Two French researchers has found a way to use the camera in front of the iPad 2 to create a 3D effect without glasses.

Although the technical parameters of the camera mounted iPad 2 does not really impress people, but research results will make more people love the computer generation of the Apple board. Jeremie and Laurence Nigay Francone, two researchers at the Research Laboratory at the Informatics Research Group EHCI have created a 3D effect by tracking the user's movements through a camera mounted in front of the screen iPad tablet 2. Basically, this camera has become a style Kinect sensor.

This effect does not really stand as the current 3D displays, but instead, it creates a depth of 3 pm in the second screen iPad. Hopefully in the near future, users will get iPad 2 gaming experience with 3D effects of this type.

"Unlocking" the iPhone - New Job earn a lot of money.

Kevin Lee, a guy last year student at George Mason University are earning $ 50,000 per year thanks to work by the U.S. government is now legally "unlocked" iPhone.

To push for his work, Kevin Lee even posted classified ads on Craigslist with the world's largest content, "Let your iPhone is" unlocked "today."

Within minutes, young students who study computer science can download code into the iPhones of customers and quickly opened the gate to a world of software applications and not in the App store Apple Store that are condemned. The "exclusive" unlocking include: add an Internet connection of the iPhone with a laptop or with iPad without extra charge to use the service for AT & T, the change of AT & T or Verizon with a firm cheaper telecommunications; customize iPhone with 3D displays, interface changes, icon ...

Form of "primitive" of the "unlocking" began shortly after Apple released the iPhone first generation in 2007, but this work has now developed into a lucrative industry with millions of customers. Jailbreak or unlock (unlock) iPhone is Apple seen as the action illegal and damaging to their business, but with the U.S. government does not. Last month 7 / 2010, the U.S. copyright office has taken a number of new provisions on exemptions in the digital copyright law (DMCA - Digital Millennium Copyright Act), one of which is to allow mobile phone users jailbreak (unlock the OS) or unlock device (Unlock) for the use of unauthorized applications manufacturers.
"Honestly in the beginning, I only do this for myself and friends but it has been developing very fast," Lee said, "Previously, I have 5 to 10 clients per week, but this had reached 30 to 40 today. Lee is now jailbreak your iPhone to change the design of the new screen and then "unlock" them so customers can switch to the wireless network.

Cydia, App Store "unlock" the first show earns about $ 10 million per year and has about 4.5 million weekly users find applications here. The dominance of this shop in the jailbreak world has expanded more than last year, when the emergence of a rival shop began to "gnaw" in "pie" of Cydia, and Cydia market simply wax merge with their competitors to create a monopoly in the market.

Meanwhile, some developers are unfit to be tens of thousands of dollars thanks to the sale of their applications.

Recently, Toyoto also offers a free program on Cydia booth, ads for its Scion line of vehicles. Once installed, the car will be displayed on the screen of the iPhone iPhone and the icon will be adjusted to add the icon that looks like the front of this car.

Toyota is also the first large group unveiled a web advertisement for "unlocking" www.modmyi.com. This site has traffic and revenue more than doubled since 2010.

Kyle Matthews, co-founder of the site Modmyi.com commented, "Advertising and the theme of Toyota, for me means the" unlocked "are becoming more mainstream. The industry is still growing, even the repair shop is also available unlocked for you. "

Apple and AT & T does not stop crackdown on the black market is booming. Mr Matthews said that Apple has lifted force Toyota ad and this subject and they were car manufacturers agree. Apple declined to comment on the matter.

Previously, Apple has always said that the "unlock" iPhone and iPad may void the warranty of the equipment. Two years ago, Apple filed a petition to the Library of Congress, the agency oversees copyright and that "the unauthorized modification" This constitutes an unlawful and employers are suffering from significant costs in investigating customer complaints about the iPhone is "unlocked" does not work.

Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT & T said the company is able to detect customers connect their iPhone with other devices has been "cracked" illegal. These customers will be the company sending the letter set out the options: one is that they can pay for AT & T $ 20 a month for free using the highest data; the two are constantly connecting devices are not and three is to accept give AT & T, but is automatically registered and receive invoices.

Siegel declined to disclose revenue information that AT & T lost because of unauthorized access tools, but said only a small number of customers did so. Meanwhile, the programmers said, with its technology, AT & T vulnerable to "unlock" than Verizon.

Jay Freeman, 29, is founder and executive of Cydia, App Store iPhone is not officially the world's largest. This store now offers about 700 different designs and to modify than 30,000 design fee is free. Cydia said Freeman was opened in 2008 and currently earn about $ 250,000 after-tax profits annually. Freeman employs only full time first from Delicious, bookmark site, Yahoo store to improve the design of Cydia.

However, not everyone is as open as Freeman talked about their contribution to the app store this black market. Some experts, "cracked" and the developers always refused to speak publicly. The ad on Craigslist and e-mail address is Lee was removed from the Internet. After an initial interview with the Washington Post, Lee did not give any further comment through his assistant.

Is this a Real iPad 2 Jailbreak ?

It appears that there’s something interesting for us, guess what? A jailbroken iPad 2! But well, like most of the jailbreak videos, pictures and claims coming from people other than the known development teams (like chronic and iPhone dev), this one may also be a fake.

Tabtech.de claims to have an exclusive news of iPad 2 jailbreak that’s coming from a not-so-known hacker. The so-called jailbreak is a single click, you connect the iPad 2 to your Mac, run the jailbreak tool and your iPad 2 is jailbroken. We don’t know if there’s some kind of magic that does not require you to enter your iPad into DFU or recovery mode or its something like Jailbreakme. That’s not all, the hacker claims to have custom boot logo option as well.

To support the claim, tabtech.de provides some close-up shots of the jailbroken iPad 2. We are not sure if the following custom boot logo is really a boot logo or an image in fullscreen view.

The other image even shows Cydia icon in the springboard. This one comes after well known iPhone hacker @musclenerd asked a faker to show Cydia running on his iPad 2 as a proof of jailbreak which he could not. May be the fakers have figured out a way to show cydia running in the springboard or this one is really a legitimate iPad 2 jailbreak ?

Well, we are so suspicious about this one because our very much trusted name.

iOS 4.3.1 Jailbreak On iPhone 4 And Others CAN Make You $50K

iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak using PwnageTool 4.3 was released last weekend. If you have the skills to jailbreak an iPhone 4 using that or maybe even an iPad 2, why not do what this student do? He jailbroke iOS devices and made profit on doing so.

The Washington Post ran an article on this yesterday on how one student was able to live off of jailbreaking devices: “Kevin Lee, a George Mason University senior, says he earns about $50,000 a year with an illicit-sounding pitch on Craigslist: “Get Your iPhone Jailbroken Today.””

Within minutes, the computer science major can download code onto his customers’ iPhones and fling open the portal to an alternative world of apps and software that Apple condemns. The jailbreak perks include: tethering the iPhone’s Internet connection to a laptop or iPad without paying extra AT&T charges; swapping out the AT&T or Verizon service for a cheaper carrier; or, customizing the iPhone with 3-D screens, bouncing icons or funkier fonts.

Apple of course thinks jailbreaking is illegal, but the Library of Congress thinks otherwise. Since the article was posted, the Craigslist link has been taken down. It’s unclear if Apple made Mr Lee do it, or if he just got a tremendous response. Either way, it sounds like I just gave you a new business opportunity!

Download Ultrasn0w Fixer to Unlock iPhone 4 01.59.00 Baseband on iOS 4.3.1

Folks at PushFix repo has released an unofficial Ultrasn0w Fixer which can unlock iPhone 4 01.59.00 baseband on iOS 4.3.1. For those who don't know, Ultrasn0w 1.2 was broken on iOS 4.3.x due to Apple ASLR security feature which broke Ultrasn0w code naively using 0x1000 as the main executable base address. Msft.Guy (@msft_guy) was the first one who fixed Ultrasn0w on all the betas and GM build of iOS 4.3 and later iH8sn0w ported the fix to iOS 4.3 by releasing Sn0wbreeze 2.3b4.
Steps to Install Ultrasn0w Fixer on iPhone 4 Jailbroken on iOS 4.3.1:

1. Open Cydia on your jailbroken iPhone 4.
2. Tap on the Manage tab at the bottom followed by a tap on Sources section.
3. Enter http://cydia.pushfix.info/ as Cydia/APT URL and wait for Cydia to reload its sources.

4. Click on the Search tab at the bottom and type Ultrasn0w Fixer in the search field. Choose Ultrasn0w fixer for 4.3.1 from the search results and click on Install button on the top-right to install Ultrasn0w fixer. If you haven't already installed Ultrasn0w 1.2, it will automatically install it along with the fixer.fixer.

5. Thats it. Reboot your iPhone once installation has been done.

Update#1: DjayB6 (@DJayB6) who happens to be a well-known PwnageTool bundle creator has also released his Ultrasn0w Fixer for iPhone 4. DjayB6 previously released Ultrasn0w Fixer to fix Ultrasn0w 1.2 on iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone 3GS. To install DJayB6's Ultrasn0w fixer, just add http://djayb6.com/ repo to Cydia and search iPhone 4 Ultrasn0w Fixer. Before installing DjayB6's Ultrasn0w Fixer, make sure you have installed Ultrasn0w 1.2 from official Ultrasn0w repo (http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com)

Please try these unofficial Ultrasn0w fixers at your own risk. My iPhone 4 is running 02.10.04 baseband, so i am unable to test these releases. If any of these Ultrasn0w fixers work for you, do mention in the comments section below. I'll still recommend you to wait for official Ultrasn0w fix by iPhone Dev-Team which will be arriving anytime soon as Cydia package update.

Update#1: We got our first confirmation from our Facebook fan who managed to unlock his iPhone 3GS baseband 05.13.04 on iOS 4.3.1 using Ultrasn0w Fixer at PushFix repo. Acc. to him, fixer at DjayB6 repo didn't work for him.

Apple Hid Crazy Cool Multitouch Gestures In iOS – Here's How To Use

Apple hid some new multitouch gestures in iOS 4.3, but didn't include a way to enable them without downloading an extra Mac app.

Now, thanks to a jailbreak tweak, you can switch the gestures on for your iPhone 4 or fourth generation iPod Touch.

The tweak is called MT Gestures from the developer ModMyi, and you can find it in the Cydia store on your jailbroken iPhone. (Click here to learn how to jailbreak the latest version of iOS).

Here's how to get the tweak:

* From the Cydia store search for "MT Gestures."

* Tap it, and then tap "Install" to download the tweak.

* Launch the WinterBoard app and switch "Multitasking Gestures" on. (If you haven't downloaded WinterBoard, you can also find it by searching the Cydia store).

After installing the tweak you'll have access to the new gestures. Here's how they work:

* Close four or five fingers together to return to the home screen.

* Scroll up or down with four or five fingers to view the multitasking tray.

* Scroll left or right with four or five fingers to switch between open apps. (This is our favorite).

Latest iOS 4.3.1 Gets Jailbroken (But Not iPad 2)

The iPhone software modding community out there has come up with another win, as the Dev-Team have published an untethered jailbreak software solution for iOS devices running version 4.3.1, save for the iPad 2.

Owners of the follow devices can now use the new redsn0w or PwnageTool to unlock their iDevices for app freedom:

* iPhone3GS

* iPhone4 (GSM)

* iPod touch 3G

* iPod touch 4G

* iPad1

* AppleTV 2G (PwnageTool only for now)

Those with the iPad 2 wait for a different exploit to be found. According to the Dev-Team, "The reason the untether won’t work as-is on the iPad2 is that it requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and the iPad2 is not susceptible to either the limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits."

Those who rely on the ultrasn0w baseband unlocking solution are advised to hold off on updating and jailbreaking, as the software required for the unlock isn't quite ready yet. For everyone else though, this is the way out of Apple's walled garden.

Deceased Chinese Have Burning Desire For iPad 2

While many consumers have been dying to get their hands on an iPad 2, other customers are landing the devices long after they are dead.

With the Qingming festival at hand, Chinese families in Malaysia are snatching up paper copies of Apple's newest device. Apple's newest tablet is joining replicas of LCD televisions and expensive sports cars as the latest gift to the dead, Reuters reports.

By burning the replicas, celebrants honor their dead ancestors, who they believe will receive the gifts in the afterlife. The popularity of expensive gifts like the iPad is a departure from more traditional gifts like clothing and money, which many Chinese see as more essential.

But celebrants looking to gift their deceased relatives with the iPad 2 have been frustrated as supplies of the paper replicas have dwindled. Similar to the supply constraints facing the actual iPad 2, shop owners have struggled to fulfill the demand for paper copies of the tablet. Most have only been able to offer customers replicas of the original iPad, which customers are less interested in.

White iPhone 5 saga continues as Schiller declines to untweet, moves on

He never did delete it, and now he’s resumed tweeting. Of all the intriguing aspects of Phil Schiller’s white iPhone tweet, ranging from what prompted him to take the bait to whether he was referring to the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4, the most fascinating aspect of the entire affair is that he never did go back and remove that tweet. And now that he’s resumed tweeting after the fact, it’s clear that Apple wanted that message out there. Just what exactly the message might mean is another story, as is what Apple was hoping people would assume from it. But the iPhone 5 rabbit hole continues to run deeper.

Schiller is an infrequent tweeter, and true to form for an Apple exec, rarely discusses anything related to the company. But he dropped a bomb several weeks ago when he opted to reply to a sixteen year old kid who asked him how to get a white iPhone. A quick Twitter search reveals just how many unresponded-to questions Schiller receives per day regarding Apple products, and yet he either very randomly or very carefully singled one out about the white iPhone and publicly revealed its release date. This is the kind of thing that can get a lower-rung Apple employee fired, and yet here’s Schiller himself, the second most recognizable face in the company, either feeling really bad for the kid who asked the question or intentionally planting an answer intended to leave onlookers guessing. Schiller’s tweet didn’t specify whether he was referring to the “white iPhone” coming this spring as being a late-arriving iPhone 4 white model or an upcoming iPhone 5 in white. Nor did he make it clear which portion of spring to which he was referring; it’s already been spring for two weeks and Apple.com is still set up as if the white iPhone 4 will never exist.

After Schiller’s white iPhone 4/5 gaffe (stroke of genius?), he disappeared from Twitter for two and a half weeks, suggesting that it may have been an error after all and he may have bailed on the social network altogether as a result. But sure enough, last week, Schiller began (infrequently) tweeting – albeit only about books, music, and television shows. The “white iPhone” tweet is still there, meaning that any opportunity to delete it has passed and Apple is standing by it.

What does it tell us about the late stages of the iPhone 4 era and the nature of the iPhone 5 era? Nothing, really. Did it serve its purpose? That depends on what Apple’s purpose was. Interestingly enough, the kid Schiller responded to has since gone on to say that he’s saving up his money for an iPhone 5. So much for Schiller’s attempt to get him interested in a white iPhone 4 – if that’s what Schiller was even referring to. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.

Ultrasn0w 1.3 For iOS 4.3.1 Unlock Is Coming in some Days

Musclenerd, member of iPhone dev team has tweeted that an updated version of Ultrasn0w, Ultrasn0w 1.3 for iOS 4.3.1 will be released in next few days which will fix the signal bar issues on iPhones running on the old basebands.

It has to be noted that this new updated version is not a new unlock for iphones running new basebands instead it will only fix the signal bar issues present in the jailbreaken iPhones running on the old basebands. (01.59.00 / 04.26.08 / 05.11.07 / 05.12.01 / 05.13.04 / 06.15.00)

HTC thunderbolt off Android

As most are aware the new 4G enabled HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon is a bit of a power hog when LTE is enabled, resulting in quick battery drainage, so the best way around this is to switch off LTE when not using it.

There is a way of turning off the HTC Thunderbolt LTE via a hidden menu, which we reported on (here) However according to an article over on Phone Arena and by way of Android and Me, there is now an easier way to turn off LTE via a new app.

The new app is called LTE OnOFF and has been designed and released by TeamAndIRC specifically for the Android 2.2 Froyo HTC Thunderbolt, and apparently some of the comments about the app herald its ability to increase the handset’s battery life.

Thus until such times as Verizon get round to delivering a software fix for the battery drainage problems, HTC Thunderbolt users may like to check out the Android app, which is a free download available from the Android Market.

Of course if you do download the new LTE OnOFF app for the HTC Thunderbolt, feel free to let us know how well the app works or not by posting to our comments area below.

Manage Media on Android With Windows Media Player

One of the most common complaints I hear about Android is that it lacks a desktop interface like iTunes. But in reality, Android devices sync easily to Windows Media Player in much the same way that the iPhone and iPad sync to iTunes, so any Windows user can transfer music between their PC and their Android phone or tablet. Here's how.

Unlike the iPhone and iPad, Android devices are designed to be completely self-sufficient. Because they don't rely on desktop synchronization at all, you'd be forgiven for thinking that your Droid doesn't sync with Windows. Of course, Android devices can sync to Windows just as any other media player can. You just need to set up the device correctly first, and then you can drag files around in Windows Media Player and automatically sync media libraries between your phone/tablet and your PC.

First Contact

The first time you connect your Android phone to your PC, you'll probably see a little autorun dialog box prompting you to install your phone's drivers or perhaps a small helper app that's preloaded on the phone. This step will vary a bit depending on the phone manufacturer. On my Motorola Droid X, for example, I get a prompt to install a Motorola Helper app. Run the installer, because it'll load all the necessary drivers Windows needs to sync with your device.

Be wary of any prompts that try to coerce you into downloading and installing other software from your wireless carrier, such as Verizon's V Cast Media Manager. As a general rule, these apps are terrible. They exist primarily as a way for wireless carriers to squeeze additional revenue from their customers, and they're not necessary to sync your phone to your PC, so just close any browser tabs that pop open with invitations to download this junk.

Once you've finished the installation, you should see a control panel window for your device, like the one below.

If you don't see it, open the Windows Control Panel, find 'Devices and Printers', and look for a listing for your device. For example, on my system I see an icon that looks exactly like my phone, and it's labeled DROIDX.

Within the device control panel for your phone, you'll see several options for handling the contents: 'Manage media on your device', 'Import pictures and videos', 'Browse files', and 'Change general settings'. With some devices you may see additional options, but those are the core choices.

Windows will automatically choose the default apps for managing music and photos, but you can change them if you want to by clicking Change program under each option. For this tutorial, accept the defaults of Windows Media Player and Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Import Pictures and Video

To import videos and pictures you've shot with your phone's camera, double-click Import pictures and videos. Windows will automatically search your phone's camera roll. You can add tags if you wish, and then click OK to start the import. You can check the box to delete the files from your camera, or leave it unchecked to keep them, just as with any digital camera. When all of them are imported, an Explorer window will open to show you what you've transferred.
Sync Music, Videos, and Files

Double-click Manage media on your device to get started syncing media files.

If you already have music on your phone that isn't in your Windows music library, you'll want to start by transferring those items from the phone to Windows. To do so, select your device from the list in the left pane, choose Music, and then highlight and drag all of the files into the box marked 'Drag items here'. Click Start sync to transfer them.

Once you've moved your music files from the phone to the PC, set up the sync relationship by right-clicking the drop-down menu under the Sync tab on the right side of the window and clicking Set up sync. This action will open a new window, where you may be prompted to choose how Windows Media Player should deal with the data already on your device. To prevent Media Player from wiping anything off your phone's data card, choose the option to leave the data on your device. On the next screen, you'll be asked to name your device; it should already have a name, but you can change it if you prefer. Click Finish to start the sync, which will mirror the media collection on your phone to match your library (as much as your phone's storage capacity will allow).

That's it. From this point on, when you connect your phone to your PC, Windows Media Player will look for changes between the library on your phone and its own current collection, and update as needed.

Untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak tools released

The famous iOS hacking team - iPhone Dev Team has released an 'untethered' iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak for the running iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Untethered jailbreak means you don't have to plug your iOS device to a Mac or PC whenever you wish to reboot it. However, the new PwnageTool 4.3 for Mac and redsn0w 0.9.6 RC9 for Windows and Mac don't support iPad 2 as of now. The iPhone Dev Team's new tools will work on Mac and Windows systems. Do note that this untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak doesn't enable carrier unlock for latest baseband via Ultrasn0w tool from.

New untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak tools - PwnageTool and redsn0w, don't support or enable possibility of carrier unlock for using any SIM card with iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4. So those who rely on the ultrasn0w unlock need to wait for more weeks else their iPhones would turn into iPod touch - without carrier support. Wait till the new ultrasn0w unlock is released.

The PwnageTool 4.3 and redsn0w 0.9.6 rc9 support following devices:
- iPhone 3GS
- iPhone 4 (GSM Only)
- iPod touch third generation
- iPod touch fourth generation
- iPad
- Apple TV Second Generation only via PwnageTool 4.3

No support for the freshly launched iPad 2 tablet since it requires a boot level exploit and doesn't work with known holes discovered. The credit of discovering untethered exploit in iOS 4.3.1 goes to independent iPhone Security Researcher named Stefan Esser also know as @i0n1c on Twitter social network.

Just in case you get a non-functional Cydia 1.1 icon after jailbreak, then you'll have to start all over again. Do note that jailbreaking your device voids your warranty.

10 Things That Simply Need To Be In iOS 5

It’s like Christmas for OS X and iOS developers. Each year, they flock to San Francisco’s Moscone Center, anxiously awaiting the pair of gifts that Apple annually bestows: the new iPhone, and a bundle of new features upon which they’ll build their next big thing.

If whispers and hearsay hold true, this year’s WWDC will only feature the latter; the iPhone 5, says the rumor mill, won’t be showing its face until Fall. Instead, this show is purportedly going to be all about iOS and OS X. While Apple doesn’t come right out and say it, it’s pretty safe to assume that by “iOS” they mean “iOS 5″.

Given that we’re writing about iOS on a regular basis and talking about it with readers and friends even more, we’ve got a pretty finely-tuned wishlist for iOS 5. We also happen to know that a heaping handful of Apple folk read TechCrunch regularly — and with the feature lock stage of iOS 5′s development cycle (wherein they absolutely refuse to add anything new and just focus on what they’ve already started) presumably riiiight around the corner, we figured there was no better time than now to put it out there.

1) A Better Notifications System

We’ve brought this one up a billion times, but I’ll bring it up a billion more times if we have to. Compared to even the weakest competitors, iOS’ current notification system is absolutely friggin’ laughable. It was understandable, up to a point; back in the ol’ days before the App Store, the only notifications iOS really had to worry about were incoming text messages and the occasional alarm. Toss in a dozen third party apps all crying for your attention, though, and it becomes nigh-impossible to finish a single game of Tiny Wings without wanting to send your handset itself flying off a hill.

2) Free Turn-by-Turn Navigation

While the idea is likely one that scares the pants off of the likes of Telenav and Garmin, free turn-by-turn navigation on iOS is pretty much an inevitability. Back in October of 2009, Google turned the entire GPS market on its noggin by bringin’ free (not to mention, fantastically well built) turn-by-turn support to Android 2.0+ devices. Nearly a year and a half later, it’s still an easy argument to drop in any Android-vs-iPhone flamewar for massive damage.
Apple sort of backed themselves into a corner here. Google built the iOS Maps app, and they’re almost certainly not about to give up one of their platform’s finest, most easily pitched selling points by tacking in turn-by-turn. If Apple wants the voice guided goodness, they’ll likely have to build up a Maps app for their own — and with iOS users having grown accustomed to a Google-powered Maps for around 4 years and Apple having next to no experience in the area, they’ve got big ol’ shoes to fill. With all the recent chatter of Apple opening a $1 billion data center and hiring up Maps specialists, however, it looks like they plan on doing exactly that.

3) Custom Text Notification Sounds

Sometimes, when I’m bored enough to be wondering about hypothetical situations surrounding iOS in my off-work hours, I wonder if the absence of custom text alert sounds is a running joke amongst Apple’s iOS team. As in, I wonder if they’ve got a running list of features to build for iOS, with “Custom Text Sounds” hard-coded to always have the absolute lowest priority. Only once every other thing they’ve ever considered (including the built-in fart button and the hardware laser level) is checked off the list can they start working on custom alert sounds.
That has to be it. Otherwise, I simply can’t understand how this feature is still missing.

4) Proper Native Gmail Support

Back when it launched in 2004, its relatively monstrous storage allotment and Beta exclusivity made Gmail the “cool” e-mail service for the Geeky-but-not-too-geeky crowd. 7 years later, it still holds that label.
The crowd behind the iPhone — or any Apple product, really — is a strikingly similar one. OS X is for geeks (and the friends/relatives of geeks) who are geeky enough to want something beyond Windows but not geeky enough to swear their allegiance to Linux. iPhone is for geeks who want more out of their phone than what most offer, but don’t want to have to fight their phone to keep it working (Deep breath, Android users.) If you were to venn diagram out iOS users and Gmail users, I’d imagine the overlap would be pretty massive. And yet, iOS’ support for Gmail is pretty much bare bones.
You see, Gmail has a handful of features (like flagging, starring, labeling, and archiving for example) that really make the service worthwhile. Of those, only archiving is supported in iOS’ built-in Mail app — and even that has only been available since iOS 4. Android, meanwhile, offers Gmail support that rivals that found on the desktop. Whatever chunk of that cool-kid geek crowd Apple holds, it’s not one they want to lose.

5) Sideloading of Third-party Apps

Next to free turn-by-turn navigation, the ability to run just about anything you want on an Android phone (unless it’s an AT&T Android phone) is one of the easiest silver bullets to fire off in any iPhone-vs-Android nerd-war.
Apple’s shown time and time again that they’re willing to drop the App Store banhammer on any application that they deem offensive, or that dares use APIs that Apple reserves for their own use. And that’s fine: it’s their store, and they can moderate the content however they see fit. But when you’ve got the gall to lock down that store and make it the only way to get apps onto the device (especially when the other guy is saying “Hey, we’ll only let certain stuff on our store, but you can manually load whatever the heck you please!”), you become the bad guy.
At this point, loading otherwise unobtainable applications onto the device is one of the few remaining legitimate (read: not piracy) reasons to jailbreak. As exploit after exploit have proven, the jailbreakers will always find a way in. Rather than battling them, why not just make jailbreaking less enticing? Hide the option to enable sideloading away, and make them click through a dozen warnings. Is there some danger to letting users run whatever they want? Of course! But it’s more dangerous to leave them with running a bunch of tough-to-verify hacks as their only option.

6) Wireless Media Syncing:

The iPhone has WiFi. It has Bluetooth. It has 3G. It has so many means of connecting to other devices wirelessly that it’s almost ridiculous — and yet, transferring even a single song into the built-in music app requires a silly, chintzy cable.
With OS X Lion, Apple’s introducing a feature called “AirDrop” that allows you to drag and drop files to any other system in AirDrop mode. Hopefully, iOS 5 will get an AirDrop mode of its own. Tap a button (or launch an App) on the iPhone to drop into AirDrop mode, drag over the relevant media from your laptop, and away you go. No messy cable required.

7) Improved File Handling:

Once you’ve managed to get your files onto the device, iOS does all sorts of weird stuff to workaround the fact that there’s no real user-visible file system here. Want to put that photo you just took into an album? Nope. Want to attach a file after starting the e-mail? Nope!

8) Stop Wasting The Lockscreen

Jailbreak your iPhone, and your lockscreen can very well become one of your phone’s most important screens. See your latest e-mail at a glance! Scan blurps from your favorite RSS feeds! Check the weather forecast in an instant!
Don’t jailbreak your iPhone, and your lockscreen can show… erm, a clock.
By default, iOS’ lockscreen is pretty much just a means of keeping you from accidentally firing off garbled texts while the phone is in your pocket, with over 50% of the screen wasted. We get it: minimalism is cool. As the screenshot above (of the jailbreak-only modification, statusnotifier) show, things can be minimalist and useful.

9) NFC Support:

This isn’t so much an iOS thing as it is a hardware thing, and it’s still completely unclear whether or not the iPhone 5 will offer up NFC functionality.
With that said, NFC (the short range communication technology that will eventually allow us to pay retailers with a quick wave of our phones) is coming. With huge namesthrowing their weight behind the tech, this long promised pipe dream is closer than ever to becoming part of our daily lives.
The sooner that Apple jumps on the technology, the better. If Apple promises to support the technology — even if it’s just a promise to eventually support it — and to throw their army of iPhone users behind NFC, retailers will be that much more driven to adopt it quickly. Hardware manufacturers will be driven to add NFC to their own products, thereby driving down the cost for everyone. Developers will be able to build on the tech, taking things far beyond the standard tap-to-pay concept that everyone associates with it.

10) Automatic Content Syncing For Third Party Apps

It’s 3 A.M. Your iPad is plugged in. It’s on WiFi. It has more juice and bandwidth available to it than it will just about any other time.. and it’s doing absolutely nothing.
And yet, any time I open up an application that isn’t Mail — say, CNN, Instapaper, or an RSS reader — it has to sync all the way back to the last time the app was opened. Why make me wait when I do want to use my iPad, rather than doing the majority of syncing when I’m not using it?
There we have it — the top 10 things we’re hoping ‘ for in iOS 5. Think we missed anything? Drop us a comment and share what’s on your wishlist.

Ipad 2: Capturing video in higher definition

Co-blogger Steve Sande and I have been collaborating on our attempts to find a solid solution that allows iPad 2 owners to use the screen mirroring feature in tandem with a computer video capture tool; this would simplify screencasting, training, recording and scores of other things. Steve was looking for a way to integrate his iPad's screen into his TUAW TV Live shows. I need to create videos for demonstrations, reviews, and tutorials.

While this would be relatively straightforward if Apple's mirroring support included the older Composite AV and Component AV adapters for the iPad, sadly it does not. Only the HDMI-sporting Digital AV adapter and the VGA adapter are permitted to work with the mirroring option, which helps close the analog hole for purchased/rented digital video, but it doesn't make the job of DIY iPad recording any easier.

Steve recently blogged about our first solution, a quick and dirty approach that offered a "barely enough" 480p standard-definition video feed. As Steve pointed out, this basic setup is not a high resolution answer to our video capture needs. Text is barely readable, screens fuzzy -- not ideal for either product demonstrations or how-to-videos.

We were determined to nudge quality up. To do that, I turned to Elgato, who graciously provided an EyeTV HD unit (normally retails for $199), which allows Macintoshes to capture HD video from component sources. (Our original solution was built around composite video.)

Sewell Direct, manufacturers of the $40 PC to TV converter Steve bought, provided a SW-4280 unit (retails for $79.95) that offers plug-and-play VGA-to-Component conversion at 720p (60fps) and 720i (30fps) as well as 480p.

Using Apple's $29.00 VGA adapter, I connected from my iPad to the SW-4280 (a male-to-male VGA cable is included with the unit), and from there, I used component cables (included with EyeTV) to connect to the EyeTV HD.

In order to bring sound into the equation, I had to track down a standard 1/8" male-to-male audio plug cable. I had one on-hand, but you can buy one at Amazon for about two bucks shipped. The SW-4280 has an audio line-in jack, and I used the device's RCA output jacks to connect to the EyeTV. (The stereo RCA cable was also included with the EyeTV HD.)

The EyeTV unit runs off a standard USB 2.0 jack, pulling its power from that connection. You'll need a standard power outlet for the converter box, but the SW-4280's plug uses a nice sideways design and is very low profile.

Ergonomically, this setup is (as with all cable-driven solutions) a nightmare. I have used Apple's composite cable, VGA connector and new HDMI connector, and they are all very, very awkward, especially if you plan on manipulating your iPad in any way whatsoever, such as from landscape to portrait.

The problem is that the weight of the connector itself or, more usually, the cables attached to that connector, keep dragging the connector out of its socket. And, trust me, there's almost always a lot of cable weight involved. You can force the connector to stay in place with the use of rubberbands, but they do interfere with a significant portion of your touch screen. I'd heard the suggestion of taping a loop of the VGA cable to the back of the iPad to reduce the strain, and I tried it, but it didn't work well-unless you have gaffer's tape or another strong but residue-free option I wouldn't recommend it.

Add in a sound connector on the other side (unlike the iPod touch, the iPad places the audio jack at the top left of the unit, a la the iPhone), you have cables coming out from everywhere. Prepare to use a good iPad stand, preferably using landscape orientation.

As you'd expect, capture worked better in landscape than in portrait, as the source ratio better matched the destination. More pixels simply offer a better image. But also, when you have cables sticking out of both the top and bottom of the unit, landscape becomes the only practical solution for keeping the iPad still so the cables won't fall out.

So how good was the capture? Not only were there obvious compression artifacts -- as you would expect with any pixel-to-TV rendering, but as the screen shots at the top of this post show, there is definitely an aspect ratio issue. You can see the same problems in the embedded video that follows.

All in all, I'm really pretty happy with the quality of the captured video, even with the aspect ratio issue. The "No Signal" issue I show at the end of the video is easily solved by messing with the Picture button on the SW-4280. I had simply forgotten to do so during that video capture segment.

I still think we can do better though. I'm planning on trying out an HDMI-to-Component solution next. The big advantage of doing so is this: One cable. HDMI carries audio as well as video so you don't need cables coming out of two ends of your unit. I still expect to experience the connector port's inexplicable need to automatically disconnect itself from its attached cable, but I suspect it will be far easier to work with.

Apple iPad 2 Launch Results in “Underwhelming” Motorola Xoom Sales

2011 is turning out to be a pretty good year for Motorola as they quickly becoming one of the powerhouse manufacturers of tablets and smartphones. Motorola has long had a presence in the wireless industry and has earned a reputation in delivering high quality communication devices. In recent years Motorola has shifted its gears to keep up with the growing demand of smartphones and now tablet computers.

Motorola’s latest tablet creation captured the minds of millions this past January as it made its first appearance at the 2011 CES Show. After being awarded best tablet award at the 2011 CES show and most anticipated tablet by its followers Motorola was sure to make waves in a no wake zone held by its fierce competition with the Apple iPad.

Prior to Motorola launching the Xoom news was released that Apple was finishing up its plans to start distribution of its second version of iPad, with the iPad 2. Motorola’s Xoom launch was overshadowed by Apple’s iPad 2 that was expedited to hit sales floors within weeks that resulted in “underwhelming” sales according to Analyst Peter Misek of Jefferies & Company. According to Analysts Peter Misek, Motorola is down, but not out.

Sony may supply 8MP Image sensors for iPhone 5

All eyes are set on Worldwide Developers Conference starting on June 5 where Apple is expected to announce the next generation iPhone 5. Sir Howard Stringer, president and CEO of Sony Corp, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, is said to have slipped Sony s plans about 8 megapixel image sensors to be supplied to Apple for next generation iPhone 5. Seth Weintraub, owner of 9to5Mac blog noted that Stringer stated that the factory making image sensors for Apple was affected by the Tsunami in Japan.

Apple usually sources the image sensors for its iOS devices from OmniVision that offered backside-illuminated 5 megapixel CMOS Image sensor in the iPhone 4. OmniVision Factory located in Japan is reported to be affected by Tsunami and hence there has been a delay in supply of image sensors for Apple products.

According to report by WSJ, Stringer casually stated -
Early on, he raised the irony of Sony supplying camera components for Apple devices. It always puzzles me, he said. Why would I make Apple the best camera? It is unclear what devices he was talking about as Sony isn t known to supply key camera components, known as image sensors, to Apple.

As opposed to that, Weintraub had paraphrased Stringer s mention as:
Our best sensor technology is built in one of the (tsunami) affected factories. Those go to Apple for their iPhones or iPads. Isn t that something? They buy our best sensors from us?

Sony also manufactures backside-illuminated Exmor R image sensors which were recently used in the current Xperia Arc model. Hence it might have been an indirect offer from Sony to Apple for buying image sensors from them instead of getting the iPhone 5 shipment delayed. As of now there s no second reported to confirm what Weintraub heard at the interview but it looks ambiguous why Sony would supply parts to one of its rivals.

From the mixed reports available so far, I believe iPhone 5 indeed will have 8 megapixel Image Sensor. However, there s no clarity whether those Image Sensors would be from OmniVision or Sony.

iPhone 5, iPad 3 release date talk shoved off by iPad 2 TV ad

Pay no attention to the awkwardly approaching iPhone 5 release date because the iPad 2 is magical, says a new television ad from Apple which arrives at a time when many are wondering if the new device’s “magic” consists of being invisible. And yet Apple has taken to widely advertising the second generation iPad even as some shut-out buyers are wondering if they should focus more on the iPad 3, and others in the land of iProducts are attempting to figure out the true-yet-hidden story of the fifth generation iPhone which is currently positioned in Apple’s secret on-deck circle.

The iPad 2 ad comes at an interesting time, as continued lack of inventory and overwhelming demand mean that advertising can’t translate into immediate sales. Apple could be running the ads simply to boost the already oversaturated iPad 2 hype and demand levels, hoping it’ll translate into future sales once inventory catches up to that demand. Or Apple could simply be tired of hearing the phrases “iPad 3″ and “iPhone 5″ spoken by anyone, and is willing to use some of its massive cash hoard to run ads whose sole purpose is to remind people that Apple does in fact have a new product on the market in the hopes of taking focus away from unannounced products.

Still, the iPhone 5 is widely expected to come this summer, and recent talk of it possibly being pushed to the fall is not the kind of exposure Apple wants for its products. Worse, some who’ve been turned away from buying an iPad 2 have now begun counting the days, weeks, and months toward the iPad 3. It may be little more than an open expression of frustration, with those buyers ultimately falling in line once the iPad 2 inventory cavalry arrives in a few weeks. But again, every mention of the phrase “iPad 3″ in any context is bad news for Apple. And so the TV ads for the iPad 2, even though they can’t possibly translate into immediate iPad 2 sales thanks to the current near-total lack of iPad 2 inventory, could help to keep the “iPad 3″ notion away from the mainstream – and if Apple is lucky, it just might help to put the iPhone 5 pin back in the grenade for a day as well. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.
