I thought that the answers to these two questions would make for an informative blog post on some of the possible new iPhone 5 features, as well as some of the voice recognition technology that’s already out there for the iPhone
I’ll do my best to answer.
The short answer to the second question is easy: yes and yes. The iPhone 5 will presumably supercede the iPhone 4 and become the standard model offered by all supporting service providers. At present, that means AT&T and Verizon, with rumors that even Sprint could land the iPhone 5 as well.
Voice Recognition Technology for the iPhone 5
Now on to the voice recognition issue. That’s a topic that interests me personally, because I’m a relatively heavy user of voice-recognition software––namely Dragon Dictate 2.0.2 at present. In fact, I’m using it right now to compose this blog.
I’ve heard nothing specific about standard voice recognition on the iPhone 5. I wouldn’t rule it out, but wouldn’t count on it either. Happily, there are already voice recognition solutions that you can use even on an iPhone 4, And they’re free.
Dragon Dictation 2.0 is an easy-to-use voice recognition application that is powered by the same Dragon NaturallySpeaking dictation engine that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text content for everything from email messages to blog posts on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. The developer Nuance claims that it’s it’s up to five times faster than typing on the iPhone virtual keyboard. I can certainly attest that using Dragon Dictate on my Mac is a lot faster than typing.
Dragon Dictation 2.0 features a pop-up toolbar with app icons that allow you to speak status updates and send them directly to Facebook or Twitter, or speak any text and send it directly to the text messaging client or clipboard — all without leaving the Dragon Dictation app client. Dragon Dictation 2.0 also features an Auto Save function that automatically saves your dictated text when interrupted by an incoming phone call.
Nuance also has made available on the Apple App Store the iOS4-compatible Dragon Search mobile application that enables users to speak searches that are returned from a variety of content sources including Google, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, iTunes, YouTube and Twitter via the Dragon Search Carousel. Both Dragon Dictation 2.0 and Dragon Search immediately available for free on the Apple App Store for a limited time.
